This seemed to improve performance of My Site and People Picker in SharePoint 2007

– Ran the following commands in sequence:

stsadm -o sync -ListOldDatabases 0

stsadm -o sync -DeleteOldDatabases 0

stsadm –o sync –sweeptiming m:2

stsadm –o sync –synctiming m:2
